An elderly Racine man used candy to lure a 5-year-old girl into his apartment where he pulled down her pants and touched her, a criminal complaint filed Tuesday said.
Kenneth Hinkle, 81, denied the Sept. 2 event took place, stating that he believed he was being blackmailed, but later asked investigators: "How much time am I going to get?" the charging document said.
The pedophile, who was convicted in 1962 of indecent exposure, is now charged with first-degree sexual assault of a child and faces up to 60 years in prison if convicted of the Class B felony.
According to the complaint, two children saw the young girl go into Hinkle's unit at the Allegro Apartments on Erie Street. When she came out approximately five minutes later, the girl had her pants partially down and the other children could see her butt. The girl still had candy in her hand when the children went to tell the girl's mother, investigators said.
Neighbor Leonard Riley said he's known Hinkle for 12 years and doesn't believe the assault happened.
"I think those kids lied," he said. "I don't know what the circumstances are, but I don't see that from him."
The pedophile denied the girl was in his apartment and said he gave her candy while she was in the hallway, the complaint said.
