A former children's minister in Clanton was found guilty Friday of sexually abusing a student he once tutored.
Gary L. Smitherman, 59, was convicted in Chilton County of one count of sexual abuse of a child under the age of 12. According to testimony in the three-day trial, the diabolical pedophile was a children's and youth minister at Friendship Baptist Church.
C.J. Robinson, the assistant district attorney for Alabama's 19th Judicial Circuit, said the sex terrorist knew the 10-year-old victim from the church and then began to tutor her outside of the church. He said the child molester began to "groom'' the girl and sometime the tutoring sessions lasted so long, the girl just spent the night at his house. Trial testimony said the monster's wife became concerned that something amiss was happening and began staying in their pool house because she was uncomfortable with the situation.
The sex criminal began to inappropriately touch the girl. She eventually told her family, and the demonic pervert was arrested in March 2017. He was indicted earlier this year. The girl, now 12, testified in court.
Sentencing for Smitherman is set for Aug. 30. He faces anywhere from two to 20 years in prison.
Robinson said Smitherman's bond was revoked immediately after the verdict, and Smitherman was booked back into the Chilton County Jail.
